Martell has announced limited-edition releases across its entire core cognac range for Chinese New Year 2026, marking the Year of the Horse. The French cognac house will release special bottles from VSOP to XXO featuring custom calligraphy by Chinese artist He Datian, alongside a 500-bottle limited release of L’Or de Jean Martell Zodiac Edition.
The connection between Martell and the horse runs deeper than symbolism. In modern Chinese, the word for horse matches the first character of Martell’s name.
“This year holds special significance as in modern Chinese, the word for horse matches the first character of Martell, reflecting a deep, natural connection to this noble and free-spirited animal, echoing Martell’s own audacious spirit,” the company stated in its announcement.
This marks the first time Martell has extended its Chinese New Year celebration across its complete core portfolio.
Artist He Datian, known for his horse drawings, created bespoke calligraphy where horses emerge from the Chinese characters forming the word Martell. Each design was adapted to match the personality of each cognac expression
An evocation of nobility and free-spirit
Martell Cellar Master Christophe Valtaud enriched L’Or de Jean Martell without modifying its essence, but while expressing certain characteristics evoking the personality of the horse. He made a careful selection of very old eaux-de-vie drawn from different Years of the Horse. It requires an outstanding expertise to combine the elegance of the original cognac with vivacity and complexity, evoking the verve, nobility and controlled energy associated with the horse.
A cognac distinguished by its vitality
The nose is full and supple, with aromas of honey, candied fruit, floral overtones and a discreet aged quality. On the palate, L’Or de Jean Martell Zodiac Edition – Assemblage du Cheval unleashes the vivacity of red fruit and blackcurrant, complemented by a subtle sweetness, as well as wonderful volume, length and complexity, vividly evoking the noble, intrepid spirit of the horse.
A decanter by Baccarat
Maison Martell created in collaboration with Baccarat an object of exquisite elegance: a decanter evoking a single, pure drop of cognac, which complements the richness and refinement of the blend within. The mouth-blown crystal decanter is covered in 19-carat gold and crowned by a red crystal stopper that is a representation of a horse’s head. This remarkable cognac is released in just 500 individually numbered decanters.
